Donna and I, like many San Diegans, love our home town. The weather is ideal and each area of the city has it’s own vibe. I (Geri) grew up in Lakeside, and have watched it grow and change over the years, and I’m proud so many people are doing so much to make this an even better place for everyone.

This last Saturday, we were proud to photograph the Once in a Blue Moon auction and dinner fundraiser for the Lakeside’s River Park Conservancy. It’s mission is to preserve and restore the San Diego River while integrating recreational, educational and cultural opportunities for all to enjoy.

The Conservancy’s Executive Director, Robin Rierdan, and her team have worked hard to make the local stretch of the San Diego River something everyone in Lakeside can be proud of. Lakeside’s River Park Conservancy is also supported of by many others, including Supervisor, Dianne Jacob. I’m not sure of any other supervisor who gets more involved in their district than Ms. Jacob does for our community.

Personally, I was proud to see the efforts of people whom I have been looking up to for years, continue to be driving forces in the improvements of Lakeside. People like my next door neighbors and high school teachers; and new positive people in my life like many other parents from my son’s school that supported this event. It was a blast sitting down with them and enjoying some fabulous food from a great local restaurant, Mario’s (which happens to be my son Charlie’s favorite), while supporting such a special cause for our community.

Laughter

October 2, 2009

Last night, I (Donna) had the pleasure of photographing the Honselaar hotties…the intent was to photograph the youngest for her birthday pics and the older two in their dance costumes. As a photographer, I believe that I have the responsibility to not only capture smiling faces but also to catch those single moments in time that you can never get back. Every once in a while I capture a moment that says what words can’t…the pleasure that Cindy gets raising three gorgeous, sweet little girls. I have photographed Cindy and family for almost 10 years and watched her girls grow from tiny infants into the sweet things they are today!

This was an impromptu shot of Cindy and Addison I came across while editing. I think it is my favorite image ever of Cindy! Thank you Cindy for trusting me to capture your daughters as they get older and more beautiful every year!

Enjoy!

Go Griffins

October 1, 2009

Donna and I are both football fanatics, and Donna gets to feed that hunger this season photographing many of the Grossmont Griffins football games. Enjoy the slideshow.

I have always been told by my parents to surround myself with good people in my life. I will admit to making some choices over the years that might not have been as healthy for me. I have recently come to the realization that time spent with people who aren’t “good people” is a waste of my time.

What prompts those words in this post? Geri and I seem to have been truly blessed by all of the people we have encountered since starting Reminisce. Every single one of my experiences photographing with Geri has been a laugh out loud, fun time. We always go with the intention of getting in and out of our sessions and it NEVER happens. Anyone who has been photographed by us can attest to the fact we end up in endless conversations with our subjects, learning about their lives and truly making them a part of our business. I see us “reminiscing” with our customers years from now as we continue to photograph all of the events in life that are worth reminiscing about.

I love that Geri and I have been able to combine our lives on this blog and share it with, not only our family, but all of the friends we make each day doing what we love. On Monday, Geri and I photographed the Davis family at Griffin Park. {See the post prior to this one!} We absolutely had a blast! The boys and I talked baseball, we shared stories about the unusual times we capture on a camera, and we became friends. Geri has already posted those amazing pictures on here which made me realize I was remiss in not sharing Sandi and her family’s amazing session!

Sandi just glows. We were blessed to be chosen to photograph Sandi and her family. You can tell how much this family loves each other. Constant hugs and kisses all around. There was tons of laughter and fun during our session at the beach. The sun had completely gone down by the time we left the beach that night. Once again we shared stories, laughed and made new friends.

We are blessed.

Enjoy!

A Day with the Davis Family

September 17, 2009

It was a beautiful day at Harry Griffin Park in La Mesa. Not only was the weather great, but the people in front of the lens were a blast. The Davis boys were perfectly wiggly, and the parents were relaxed enough to remind us to focus on the things that really matter. It’s always a treat to be around people who can reflect the depth of enjoyment a family brings.

With the Highest Respect

September 12, 2009

Donna and I photographed a smaller wedding today on Coronado Island, and since it was on the smaller side, I stayed behind and got some photos of the ship pulling out for their Harbor Cruise reception. We’ll be sharing some photos from that wedding in the near future but until then, I had something else very moving I wanted to share with you.

After the ship pulled out, I was pretty hungry and very thirsty. It was a hot day to run around in all black snappin’ pics, so I decided to check out the new Candelas  restaurant at the Ferry Landing. While there, a group of men came wearing bright tie-dyed shirts. It’s something you don’t see everyday, even in a fun and laid back city like San Diego. Since I had my camera I couldn’t resist taking a photograph.

After taking the picture, I had to meet these guys. Now I want to share them with you.

Meet Travis and his Army buddies. I asked them why they were all dressed up and they replied it was a “celebration of life” in honor of their friend, Travis. Mid June, Travis was seriously wounded while in Iraq. I don’t know the actual extent of his injuries, but his scars revealed why these gentlemen felt a celebration was in order, and necessary.

I love photography, but right now I wish I was a writer. I want the perfect words to express how honored I feel that I met these gentlemen. This team!

Life’s funny. I had my schedule and I thought I knew what I was going to be blogging about this afternoon. But meeting these guys, seeing their bond and their character with each other…  I’m deeply thankful for all that Travis, his team, and all the other service men and women give for our freedom. I fear the words I place here may over simplify how thankful I am to have been at the right place at the right time today. But than again, the simple thank you I want to type might be uncomplicated, but it is straightforward, and I mean it with the highest respect. So, to Travis and his buddies, thank you for all you’ve already done and given. It was a pleasure to meet you guys.

Grossmont Football

September 7, 2009

Happy Labor Day everyone!

Just a quick post to share some of the pictures I took at my nephew Darrin’s football game on Saturday. It was a great game after a shaky first half and they beat Mesa College 47-13 (37 points in the second half!). Darrin {Number 32} scored his first touchdown as a college player and ran the ball quite a few times. I truly enjoyed the experience of photographing on the field and am looking forward to all of the other games this season! There are many exciting players to watch on this team and they have a coaching staff that are top notch!!

During the football game, there were hot air balloons flying over Cathedral Catholic High School (Mesa is using these fields while theirs undergoes renovations) and right over the football field. We had amazing weather and the clouds were doing some phenomonal things. Here is one of the pics I took between plays!

Sharing Some Lavado Love

September 3, 2009

We had posted some images from their wedding before, but take a few moments, click play and enjoy this video from some of our favorite images from the Lavado Wedding.

Lori Lavado: Truly amazing Geri and Donna! Not only are the photographs top notch - I love the music and how the backdrop changes with the music. You are the Best! Thanks soooo much! Love, Lori and Derrick

Kate: I am sooo excited to shoot you guys!! It is going to be so fun!! Let me know if you need anything...you girls rock!!

Kate: Donna - just referred someone to you on a day that i am booked...just wanted to give you a heads up

--> admin: You are fabulous! I can not tell you how excited my daughter is to have you take her picture! It is always "MOM" taking it and she knows you are going to take much better pics than her unhip Mother!!! We are both looking forward to it!!!

Geri and I are huge football fans and during football season, have a hard time talking to each other while a football game is on…one of us is usually cheering (or cussing) for one of our favorite teams and we don’t get much done. I have been lucky enough to have been able to follow my nephew since his years in flag football. The last four years he was a pivotal part of the Patrick Henry football organization and anyone who knows him can tell you he lives and breathes football and has since he could walk. My sister, Debbie (his Mom…when my sisters and I aren’t taking credit for being his Mother), tells the story of watching him play football games against his toughest opponent when he was a kid. He would run play after play in the backyard…against himself. Yes…he played the offense…and the defense. He would run the play as an offensive player and then switch it up and be the defensive player the next time around. She even tells of the time she and her husband watched Darrin give himself a penalty for some wrong move he made on the field.

We always knew he was something special! He has always been a team leader and his teammates can attest to the fact that, not only was he a great leader on the field, but a great friend off the field. He played with the same group of guys for many years and they all looked forward to their Senior season. One of his friends even was quoted in the newspaper as saying that Darrin was the franchise…he made the Patriots a playoff team!

Sadly, I think it was 3 games into the season, at the beginning of one of their home games, Darrin (playing quarterback) took a bad hit to his knee. He went down and did not get back up. I have never been in a stadium as silent as that one was when two people had to help him off the field. To say there were tears in people’s eyes on and off the field would be pretty accurate. You could feel the upset in the air at the game when he left in the golf cart to go to ER. His buddies rallied and won the game that night and as soon as the game ended many of them headed to the emergency room to find out the fate of not just Darrins’ knee, but their entire football season.

Darrin was never able to return to the high school football field (His team did make it to the playoffs while he cheered, mentored and “coached” from the sidelines) but has now found himself in an amazing situation at Grossmont Community College. He is going to play the position he loves so much (running back) for a team that “Sporting News” quoted as the best in the Nation amongst community colleges. We are so excited to see him play at a college level for a team that surely is going to have a wonderful season!

I inquired about placing an ad in their program and was asked by one of the coaches if I knew anyone interested in taking pictures for the team since the last photographer moved away from the school. To say I was thrilled to be given this opportunity to be able to photograph my nephew for another season is an understatement. I will be helping out by providing pictures at the away games for them so they have images for the insert added each week in the program detailing the previous week’s games. His first game is this Saturday at Cathedral High against Mesa CC at 6pm if anyone is interested in seeing my nephew in action! We would love to see you there!

Here is the ad Geri created to go in the program. She did an amazing job as always! And yes…he is jersey number 32 again this year!!!

Enjoy!

Class of 2010-Congratulations!

September 1, 2009

For everyone with children…we are all sad to see summer go but excited for the new school year to begin! I know this summer, being at home with my daughter, Cassi, was a blessing as much as a curse! I loved the time we spent together but I am missing that “me” time I can have when she is in school. Geri’s sons are just starting their journey into preschool and elementary school and Geri is already involved in many volunteer projects at their prospective schools. Cassi starts a new chapter of her life by beginning middle school this year. Anyone who has been through the middle school years has warned/assured? me these are the hardest to get through so I am looking for all of the prayers and advice I can get!

Most of our blog followers know that Geri and I both worked many of the last summers for a company that catered to high school seniors (I believe almost 2400 of them each summer). I have to say that by September we were usually a bit tired, worn out and cranky from so many sessions in such a small amount of time. We now find ourselves blessed to be able to cater to a fewer number of high school seniors on a personal basis that allows us so many more opportunities than before. We are excited to connect with some of the local high schools in our area and offer them sessions that show off their personalities and allow them to shine in one of the many gorgeous venues San Diego has to offer!

We photographed Kellie in La Jolla on a gorgeous San Diego summer day. Her Mom and her were a joy to work with and we had a great time getting to know all about Kellie and her busy senior year coming up. The camera loved her and we can not wait to hear her reaction to the images we were able to capture for her!

Thank you, Kellie, for being such a beautiful subject and giving Geri and I just one more reason that we love what we do!

Enjoy!

PS…Look in the coming days for the fabulous Caroccia Clan and Honselaar Hotties and their sessions! I can’t wait to share them with all of you!
